Lizzie Gardner has a plan.

What does she want to do with her life? She doesn’t know, but she’s sure as hell going to ace every class her senior year so wherever she decides to go, she’s a shoo-in. She’s going to balance her life perfectly, between school, her friends, and her family. Get through this year, she thinks, and she’ll be golden.

But she barely kickstarts her plan before she starts running into roadblocks.

First, her step-brother Jake starts a secret relationship with Charles Lark, the most popular boy at the school. Lizzie finds herself having to manage their secret, all the while butting heads with Charles’ best friend Darcy, who Lizzie has (mutually) hated since middle school. Then, Jake’s newfound popularity throws Lizzie into the path of the recently graduated and absolutely gorgeous Lana who—miracle of all miracles—actually seems interested in Lizzie.

On top of that, Lizzie and her sisters’ biological father resurfaces, claiming an interest in reconnecting with his children. Though Lizzie doesn’t trust him or his motives, her mother is hesitant to deny him his parental rights flat out. Especially since now that they know where he is, there’s potential to get him to sign over his rights to Lizzie’s step-father Sam, who she’s called “Dad” since she was six years old, and the only father her younger sisters have ever known.

As the strain of classes, keeping Jake’s secret, and choosing between her new relationship with Lana and surprising feelings for Darcy becomes stronger, Lizzie finds it harder to tread water than she expected it to be. How is she supposed to keep her options open when everyone—Lana, her parents, Darcy—wants immediate answers to their questions?
